About Philip Webb:
The son of a Baptist minister, Philip Webb began performing in church at
an early age and was worship director at several churches before winning
the Chicago Bel Canto opera competition in 1989. Encouraged by that
experience to pursue a career in opera, he began a series of intensive
studies and training that included mentoring by famed Metropolitan Opera
soprano, Margaret Harshaw, and world-renowned Verdian tenor, Carlo
Bergonzi of Italy. In 1996, he performed his first leading role with a
major company – the Virginia Opera – and quickly gained recognition as a
dynamic new lyric tenor with a voice described by one reviewer as
reminiscent of a “young Pavarotti.” Especially sought out for the more
dramatic Verdi roles, Webb has performed in a wide variety of productions
and in leading opera houses around the world, including the State Opera
in Vienna, the San Francisco, Philadelphia and New York City Operas,
Chicago’s Lyric Opera and the Teatre Del Liceu in Barcelona. He is
currently on the roster at the Metropolitan Opera and is
artist-in-residence at The Master’s College in Newhall, California.
Residing in Valencia, California, Webb continues to develop his vocal
skills under the direction of Seth Riggs of Los Angeles, a legendary
vocal instructor who has worked with such popular recording artists as
Ray Charles, Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Prince and
others. As he continues to gain recognition as a unique artist with
crossover appeal in both opera and gospel genres, he plans to continue
performing and recording sacred music whenever possible. For more
