A new web site - www.mirezo.com - “my
prayer” in Spanish is a web site that gives millions of Christians from
all over the world the opportunity to light a candle at the Church of the
Annunciation in the holy city of Nazareth, via the Internet.
"Many Christians are not able to come to the Holy Land for different
reasons. The Web site allows them, in real time, to watch as a priest
lights a candle in their name and says their prayer," said Said Salem,
the tourism consultant who conceived of the idea. "They can feel like
they are in the church with the priest lighting the candle".
The Holy City of Nazareth, as place of Annunciation of Virgin Mary and
consequently starting point of salvation of the human race, occupies a
special place in the heart of the Christian faithful, who ardently search
the right opportunity to pilgrim or even to pray there, but because of
everyday problems, their wish does not always find fulfillment.
With the current technology and the communication media, particularly the
Internet, the faithful have the possibility of coming in visual contact
with the Holy Places and consequently by viewing them to gratify their
religious aspirations, in addition, of course to participating in
services, during which they will be able to commemorate through the
priests the name of their living and deceased close ones and to have
candle lit for them.
The idea for the Web site came to him during Pope John Paul II's 2000
pilgrimage to the Holy Land, he said, when friends and acquaintances
abroad began calling him and asking him to light a candle or say a prayer
for them while the pope visited Nazareth.
He came up with the idea of the Mirezo site --
http://www.mirezo.com-- as a way to
allow Christians to have their prayers said at the Church of the
Annunciation.
For a symbolic $10 fee, a worshipper places a prayer request online. A
priest from the Annunciation Church then lights a candle and offers a
personal prayer on that worshipper’s behalf. At the designated time, the
worshipper can watch the live ceremony in real time. The Mirezo services
are authorized by the Annunciation Church in Nazareth.
Since its inauguration in March, the site has had more than 40,000
visitors with thousands of Christians requesting the lighting of a
candle.
Prayers have ranged from wishes for health, happiness, fertility, and
success to the memorial of well known leaders. said Salem.
Funds from the site, he said, are used to support the highly technical
equipment needed to allow for the real-time lighting of the candle and
the upkeep of the Web site and a large portion of the proceeds are
donated to the Christian community in Israel and the Palestinian
territories. Mirezo hope that Christian community worldwide will take
the opportunity to become closer to the church and to the Christian
community here in the Holy Land.
